Netflix is expanding its gaming investment as it launches its first in-house game development studio.
The studio will focus on producing original games for the streamer’s nascent gaming platform, Netflix Games.
“Today, I’m excited to announce that we are establishing an internal games studio in Helsinki, Finland, with Marko Lastikka as the studio director,” Netflix VP of Game Studios, Amir Rahimi said in a statement.
“This is another step in our vision to build a world-class games studio that will bring a variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games — with no ads and no in-app purchases — to our hundreds of millions of members around the world.”
It will be the fourth studio owned by the streaming giant, following previous acquisitions of Helsinki’s Next Games (The Waking Dead: No Man’s Land), California’s Night School Studio (Oxenfree), and Texas’ Boss Fight Entertainment (myVEGAS Bingo).
Rahimi added: “It’s still early days, and we have much more work to do to deliver a great games experience on Netflix. Creating a game can take years, so I’m proud to see how we’re steadily building the foundation of our games studios in our first year, and look forward to sharing what we produce in the coming years.”
The streaming service features a growing catalogue of games that subscribers can play at no additional cost with no ads on iOS and Android devices.
