The most expensive TV series ever produced, The Rings of Power is already preparing for it’s second season according to Amazon Studios head, Jennifer Salke.
Before the series premiered back in September, a lot was made about the massive investment Amazon was making on the show. It was a billion dollar, five seasons bet that so far is looking like it’ll be worth it.
Amazon Studios threw their lot in with its Tolkien investment with a five seasons order in a jaw dropping $1 billion deal signed with the Tolkien estate in November 2017.
In an interview with Variety, Salke noted that production was moving fast for season 2 and the plan was to release as soon as possible.
“We want the shortest time possible between seasons, but we want to keep the bar just as high. So it’ll take what it takes. But there’s been some urgency around moving quickly, which is why these guys have been writing all through their hiatus. We’re moving fast.”
With one month in so far, the show boasts over 100 million viewers so far and Slake expects that number to rise as we get closer to the October 14th season finale.
“We’re cresting toward 100 million customers having watched it so … It’s a big number. We can’t wait to get more info on how the audience all breaks down. We really anticipate, with these last three episodes, a huge turnout, because it’s all coming together and curiosity is at a fever pitch. And these last few episodes are the strongest in the season, because they’re not just about the setup. They’re excellent.”
