The Toronto Blue Jays have given interim manager John Schneider a three-year contract, making him the team’s new full-time manager.
Schneider will become the organization’s 14th manager in club history.
Schneider, 42, was elevated to the managerial position in mid-July, when the Blue Jays decided to fire Charlie Montoyo.
Schneider, who was in the midst of his first season as Toronto’s bench coach, then led the Blue Jays to a 46-28 record the rest of the way, as well as a playoff berth.
The Blue Jays would be swept by the Seattle Mariners in the American League Wild Card Series, but Toronto’s front office nevertheless decided Schenider was the best choice to lead their team heading forward.
“Through his exceptional preparation, communication, positive energy, and relationships within the clubhouse, John demonstrated to us that he was the right leader for this team,” GM Ross Atkins said in a statement.
Schneider has been a member of the Toronto organization for 20 years, drafted as a catcher in 2002.
“I absolutely love it,” Schneider said. “And I couldn’t think of a better place to be. and couldn’t think of a better group to be with.”
