The ownership of the Calgary Flames has renewed discussions with the City of Calgary over building a new arena for the team.
We’re at the beginning of an important stage,” Calgary councillor Sonya Sharp, chair of the event centre committee, is quoted as saying in a story on the City of Calgary’s website.
“A new event centre for our city will attract investment and international events. It will have enormous benefits for visitors and for Calgarians. We look forward to working with CSEC for our mutual benefit and for a result that works for everyone.”
A previous arena deal between the city and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, agreed upon in 2019, collapsed late last year when the estimated cost of the project rose and the Flames withdrew.
The initial estimate of a new arena was $550 million split between the two parties, but that figure increased to $634 million.
When the agreement collapsed, the city council voted in January to get a third party involved.
John Fisher, Guy Huntingford and Phil Swift were tasked with determining whether the Flames still wanted to build an arena with the city, or if the city wanted to look for other potential partners to build an event centre.
