The plottings in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’ reached a fervent high in ‘The Green Council’ following the death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine).
The episode opens with Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) discovering that her father Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) has spent years plotting with members of the king’s council to enact a coup the moment her husband died — without letting her in on any of it.
Interestingly, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) – the rightful heirs to the throne – do not appear in the episode at all.
‘The Green Council’ sees Aegon crowned the new King of Westeros, even though most of the episode is spent looking for him.
It ends as Rhaenys (Eve Best) disrupts the ceremony, breaking free with her dragon and giving the usurpers a huge dose of dragon breath and spit before flying away.
With the season finale set for next Sunday, ‘The Green Council’ sets the stage for the kind of Westerosi chaos that we love so much.
