‘She-Hulk’ star Tatiana Maslany and director Kat Coiro have praised the show’s handling of sex.
It’s a topic that Marvel has typically stayed away from in its movies and TV shows, but in ‘She-Hulk’, the character’s sex life is not shied away from.
“I love it. I mean, Jessica Gao and I and Ginger [Gonzaga], we all talk about how horny this show is,” Maslany is quoted as saying in a recent interview.
“That’s like what we love the most about it, it’s kind of got a gleeful horniness. You know, which just doesn’t feel like a sort of reverent superhero thing. And it really, it’s like, I don’t know. It’s like, giddy, it’s feminine, it’s about desire. It’s about whatever!”
Coiro added: “It was definitely a part of our conversations, because you can’t make a story about a woman in her 30s navigating modern life and not address sex.”
“And I do think that the media is strangely more prude when it comes to the female point of view in regards to sex.
“And, you know, we’ve got Iron Man doing a lot of things, but then there were all these conversations and there was a lot more fear around her sex life than there was about making fun of Marvel. But we just kept saying, this is her story, and this is her truth, and we’ll handle it in a way that’s light.”
The show has had more creative freedom than most Marvel shows, and executive producer Jessica Gao also added that Marvel boss Kevin Feige let her come up with a non-conventional ending to the show.
“Kevin was the one who said, ‘There’s no reason to do a big Marvel ending. You’ve made a show that’s completely different than anything we’ve ever done before, so there’s absolutely no reason to treat it like a typical Marvel movie,’” Gao says in a recent interview.
“That’s really what got wheels turning about going really out of the box and doing something that was more true to this show, as opposed to what’s true to a typical Marvel project.”
