History was made as Uruguay and South Korea played out the first FIFA World Cup match this century with no recorded shots on goal.
Both teams huffed and puffed but couldn’t be seperated as the Uruguayans failed to build on a run of five consecutive group stage victories. However, Uruguay have now gone 465 minutes since they last conceded a goal in the group stage of the World Cup. Last time they conceded in the group stage was against England in June 2014, a goal scored by Wayne Rooney.
South Korea started the game with plenty of attacking intent and endeavour, but lacked a clinical edge in front of goal. Their best chance came just after the hour mark when Hwang Ui-Jo somehow hit his effort over the bar with the entire goal gaping.
Uruguay hit the woodwork twice, first via a well-timed header from veteran defender Diego Godin and then late on when Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde struck the post with a powerful long-range strike.
The result leaves the group wide open for either one of Portugal and Ghana who play next. The second group games are set for Monday with Uruguay facing Portugal and South Korea facing Ghana.
