The second match in Group B between the USA and Wales ended up in a toughly contested 1-1 draw.
The USA went in front thanks to a smart finish from Lille forward Timothy Weah but Wales were able to draw level with a late Gareth Bale penalty.
In the 750th international match in United States history, the Americans started a record 10 players from European clubs, with only Walter Zimmerman from Major League Soccer. DeAndre Yedlin, who came on in the 74th minute, was their only player with previous World Cup experience.
Being their first World Cup appearance since 1958, the Welsh national team came into the tournament determined to make a statement and would be delighted to at least come out of their first game with a draw.
The result leaves both sides with a point and vying for second spot in the group after England’s thumping win over Iran.
Here’s what Wales manager, Rob Page had to say after the game,
“It’s important not to lose the first game. It was similar to the Switzerland game in the Euros – we showed character and determination to come back and get a point. [On the half-time change] It was nothing against Daniel James, it just suited the game to have Kieffer [Moore] on. We couldn’t play through their press so we tried to play over it.”
“It’s all about Bale-o, rightly so. He’s never let us down. We had some players who cramped up in the last few minutes so the medical team have got some work to do to get us ready for Friday. To see the Red Wall, it’s been incredible.”
Up next for both teams, Wales play Iran and then England meet the USA on Friday.
