Chinese-born Canadian pop star, Kris Wu got hit with a 13-year jail term by a China court on Friday for rape and other offences.
The 32-year-old was arrested and formally charged in August 2021 while police conducted an investigation in response to comments online that he “repeatedly lured young women” to have sex. That’s according to a statement from the police at that time.
Back in July 2021, an 18-year-old influencer, Du Meizhu accused the actor and musician of date-raping her while she was 17 and at a time when she was drunk. It didn’t end there, she also accused him of doing the same to other young women, including two minors. He denied the accusations at the time saying that he would “walk into prison myself” if there was “any such behavior” but two weeks later, the Chaoyang District People’s Procurator in Beijing issued an official statement saying that it had approved Wu’s arrest “after investigation in accordance with the law.”
Following his sentencing, the Beijing’s Chaoyang District Court said that Kris Wu forced three women to have sex with him in 2020 while drunk and that back in 2018, he and a couple others allegedly assaulted two women they had gotten drunk.
The same statement from the court said that officials from the Canadian embassy had been present for the sentencing.
Wu grew up in Guangzhou in China and in Vancouver, British Columbia. He rose to fame as part of the popular Korean boyband EXO, before focusing on his career in China quickly becoming one of the country’s most recognized stars.
He was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months for the 2020 incident, and 1 year and 10 months for what the court described as the “crime of assembling a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity”.
