The Netherlands needed a late flurry of goals to overcome the Teranga lions of Senegal and rise to the top of the table in Group A.
This game featured the two highest-ranked teams in the group and was heading towards a drab draw until PSV forward Cody Gakpo connected with a nicely floated pass to give the Dutch team the lead in the 84th minute.
Davy Klaassen put the game beyond doubt deep in injury time by capitalising on an error from Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Senegal came into the tournament missing their talismanic Bayern Munich star, Sadio Mané. Unfortunately for them, it would prove costly as they couldn’t find a way past the debutant Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert.
The win sends the Netherlands top, tied with Ecuador who also recorded a 2-0 victory over hosts, Qatar. Setting up a fight for the top spot in the next game as both teams face each other on Friday.
