Sorry to all fans and hopefuls as HBO Max has decided against reopening the doors of Degrassi Community School.
A new report from Wall Street Journal on Thursday revealed that the highly anticipated reboot had been shelved.
“The new leadership has canceled and written off projects aimed at children and teens for HBO Max,” the report explained. “Shows no longer going forward include Charlotte’s Web, a co-production with Sesame Workshop, and Degrassi, a co-production with WildBrain Studios.”
A 10 episode season was initially announced by the streamer in January but sadly, that dream is over. Production was supposed to begin in Toronto this past summer.
Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen were set as showrunners of the would-be reboot, which was initially described as “reprise of the original teen drama” that would focus on a new group of teenagers and school faculty “living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart.”
The Degrassi franchise was originally created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood in 1979, originally a series of short films called The Kids of Degrassi Street. The TV series Degrassi Junior High then launched on CBC in 1987, followed by Degrassi High from 1989–1991, and eventually Degrassi: The Next Generation, which ran from 2001–2015. Another series, Degrassi: Next Class, aired on Netflix from 2016–2017.
The new Degrassi would have marked the sixth installment in the Canadian teen drama franchise.
