Argentina survived a two-goal comeback from The Netherlands to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The South American champions went up with goals from Nahuel Molina and Lionel Messi, but were pegged back with two late goals by super substitute Bout Weghorst.
Messi’s goal was his 10th at the World Cup for his country, equaling a record held by the legendary Gabriel Batistuta.
It was a tense match all through, with referee Antonio Lahoz giving out 16 yellow cards in a game that also saw a touch line fracas after Leandro Paredes booted the ball in the direction of the Netherlands bench.
The tie was eventually decided on penalties, with Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s the hero as he saved two spot kicks and Lautaro Martínez scoring the winner.
Argentina will now go on to play Croatia in the Finals, who overcame Brazil in dramatic fashion earlier in the day.
They will be without Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel, who are both suspended following an accumulation of yellow cards.
