It looks like the door to International glory has shut for Belgium’s ‘Golden generation’ and now a key piece of that generation, Eden Hazard has announced his retirement.
The Real Madrid playmaker announced he was retiring from International football after Belgium’s embarrassing group stage exit from the 2022 World Cup.
Hazard took to Instagram to announce, writing “A page turns today… Thank you for your love. Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008. I have decided to put an end to my international career. The succession is ready. I will miss you”
He made his debut for the Red Devils in 2008 at the age of 17, and scored 33 games in 126 appearances.
On his debut against Luxembourg, Eden Hazard came off the bench to become the eighth youngest player for his country. He went on to feature at three World Cups and two European Championships, as well as captaining the team 56 times.
Hazard follows coach Roberto Martinez in walking away from the Belgium national team. At Qatar 2022, the Belgian team was disappointing scoring only once in three games and crashing out at the group stage.
