A flood watch warning has been issued for parts of Southern Ontario, including Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, and Halton Region.
In a reversal from last week’s frigid weather and winter storm, rain and warm temperatures are expected over the New Year’s Eve weekend and into next week.
A system of precipitation is also moving towards the region, expected to arrive by the weekend, and the combined effects of the warm air temperatures and rain have Environment and Climate Change Canada warning of potential flooding in waterways across the region.
Melting snow and the approaching system have already combined to trigger flood watches in Niagara Region.
Daytime high temperatures over much of southern Ontario from yesterday (Dec. 29) to Sunday Jan. 1 are expected to be 5 C or higher, according to the Province of Ontario Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.
“No major flooding is expected at this time,” the Ontario Flood Forecasting and Warning Program statement reads. “However, some watercourses may reach or exceed their banks, leading to localized flooding in floodplains, low lying areas, areas with poor drainage.”
The government weather agency warns that “rapid snowmelt when the ground is still frozen can cause flooding even in areas that have not flooded before,” adding that “proper draining, even in winter, is important to reduce property damage.”
