Fans finally get a first look at Greta Gerwig’s long anticipated Barbie movie with Margot Robbie playing the legendary plastic doll.
Back in 2019, Robbie told Variety the importance of bringing Barbie to life on screen. “I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids,”
Gerwig who serves as the director recently revealed she was terrified to helm a film about iconic Barbie dolls. She said, “I think there’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘Well, anything is possible!’ It felt like vertigo starting to write it.”
“Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”
Robbie previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the Warner Bros. film is hoping to subvert expectations. “We like the things that feel a little left of center,” the two-time Oscar nominee said. “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted’…can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”
