Rapper Meek Mill ensured 20 Philadelphia women who were in prison were able to spend Christmas with their families by paying for their bail.
The Philly-born rapper, 35, paid the bail of the women who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford to get home for the holidays.
Five of them were released from Riverside Correctional Facility on Friday, according to a press release.
Mill, whose name is Robert Williams, said, ‘It was devastating for me to be away from my son during the holidays when I was incarcerated. So I understand what these women and their families are going through.”
“No one should have to spend the holidays in jail simply because they can’t afford bail,” he continued. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to help these women be with their families and loved ones during this special time of year.”
Several women were released on Christmas Eve, some joined by their children and other loved ones in emotional pre-holiday reunions.
The release said that the criminal justice reform advocate also gave each of the women a gift card to purchase groceries or gifts.
Following his stints behind bars and various run-ins with the law over the years, Meek Mill, along with other famous names including Jay-Z and Robert Kraft, established the REFORM Alliance, an organization that aims to “transform probation and parole by changing laws, systems and culture to create real pathways to work and wellbeing.”
He has since assisted in the passing of 16 bills in 10 states, working toward “stable communities, stronger families and greater public safety for all,” per a release.
