Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach has been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack at his home in Starkville.
The university announced Leach’s transfer to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
“Mississippi State University head football coach Mike Leach remains in critical condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson,” a statement by the university reads.
“Mike’s family is with him and appreciates the overwhelming expressions of love and support for the coach, but also requests that their family’s privacy be respected at this time.
“That is the extent of information that MSU has available regarding Coach Leach’s condition. And the university will make no other comment at this time.”
According to the Chicago Ledger, Leach “may have suffered seizures with the possibility of brain damage.” The outlet added that EMTs had to use a defibrillator multiple times to restore his normal heart rhythm.
Leach is in charge of his 3rd season at Mississippi State, with a 19-17 record and an Egg Bowl victory in his time there. Bulldogs defensive coordinator Zachary Arnett will take charge of the team in Leach’s absence.
“Coach Leach is a fighter, and he is battling,” MSU chief communications officer Sid Salter told local TV station WLBT.
