A shooting in a condo in Vaughan has left one person injured and six people dead, including the suspected shooter.
York Regional Police were notified of a weapons call at the Jane Street and Rutherford Road condo this evening after reports that several people were shot.
In a press conference around 11 p.m., Chief Jim MacSween said emergency crews responded to an active shooting call around 7:20 p.m.
“Once the officers arrived, they were met with with … a horrendous scene where numerous victims were deceased,” MacSween said. “There is no further threat to the community at this point. We offer our sincere condolences to the victims and their families.”
Investigators located a woman that had been shot in the face, police said, later discovering other victims.
MacSween said the victim transported to the hospital is expected to survive. The motive is unclear, and no officers were injured.
An officer discharged their firearm and as a result the suspect died, MacSween said.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit, which investigates the conduct of officers in incidents that have resulted in death, serious injury, or alleged sexual assault, has been notified to investigate the suspect’s death, he said.
