Annie Wersching, known for her roles as FBI agent Renee Walker in the popular TV series “24” and as Tess in the video game “The Last of Us,” has died at the age of 45.
The actress passed away on Sunday morning in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer, as confirmed by her publicist. The type of cancer was not specified.
Wersching continued to work in the entertainment industry even after her diagnosis in 2020, with prominent roles in Star Trek: Picard as the Borg queen in Season 2 and The Rookie.
She also voiced the character Tess in the popular video game “The Last of Us,” which was later adapted into an HBO series.
Wersching’s husband, actor Stephen Full, issued a statement expressing the family’s grief, saying “There is a cavernous hole in the soul of this family today. But she left us the tools to fill it.”
The actress was also remembered by her colleagues and friends, with director and executive producer of 24, Jon Cassar, saying “Annie you’ll be missed, you left your mark, and we’re all the better for it.”
Wersching was born and raised in St. Louis and appeared in numerous TV shows throughout her two-decade career, including “General Hospital”, “The Vampire Diaries”, “Runaways”, “Extant”, “Timeless”, “Bosch”, and “The Rookie”.
One of her final roles was in Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard, exactly two decades after her screen acting debut in an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.
Wersching is survived by her husband, Stephen Full, and three sons. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family.
Fans and admirers of the actress took to social media to express their condolences, with Neil Druckmann, the creator of “The Last of Us,” writing on Twitter “We just lost a beautiful artist and human being. My heart is shattered.”
Abigail Spencer, who appeared with Wersching on the sci-fi series “Timeless,” tweeted “We love you Annie Wersching. You will be deeply missed.”
