Yelp has named Vancouver restaurant Northern Café and Grill as Canada’s top place to eat in 2023, according to a list released on Wednesday.
The breakfast and lunch spot, located in a building next to a lumberyard in the southernmost part of the city, is run by the Mah family and serves up comfort food. It beat out 99 other restaurants across the country to claim the top spot.
Yelp’s annual list is determined through a multi-process methodology which begins with the website reaching out to its user community and asking them to nominate restaurants that they can’t wait to return to this year.
These nominations are then ranked according to ratings, the number of reviews, and the volume of nomination submissions received. Yelp’s appointed community managers then help curate and refine the lists, resulting in the final ranking for the year.
The Northern Café and Grill is run by Raymond Mah, a Red Seal-trained chef, who works alongside his mother Connie, father Jimmy, and brother Richard.
Raymond said the entire family is thrilled by the Yelp ranking. “Being number 1 is such a great honor. We’re so happy,” he said.
“We definitely could not have done this without the support of the community and our guests and our family and friends. It’s been such a great experience.”
