Basketball fans in Toronto are eagerly anticipating the first-ever WNBA pre-season game to be held in Canada, as the Minnesota Lynx face off against the Chicago Sky on May 13 at the Scotiabank Arena.
The game marks a milestone for the WNBA, as it is the first time in the league’s 26-year history that a game will be played in Canada.
Demand for tickets has been huge, with the first presale on Monday selling out quickly and a second presale coinciding with International Women’s Day proving just as popular.
Lower-bowl seats were nearly sold out just eight minutes after sales launched, with the last pairs being snapped up after just shy of 20 minutes.
Canadian basketball fans will be thrilled to see Chatham’s own Bridget Carleton playing for the Minnesota Lynx, alongside 2019 Rookie of the Year Napheesa Collier, who returned to the basketball court just 10 weeks after giving birth last season.
Collier is excited about the game and the possibility of expanding the WNBA into Canada, saying that Toronto has been a city in talks for expansion. The game is expected to be a huge success and could be a sign of things to come for women’s basketball in Canada.
