A 16-year-old football fan has been arrested after running onto the pitch during Liverpool’s Premier League match against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
The young fan made his way onto the pitch to celebrate Liverpool’s seventh goal of the match, which saw them secure a dominant 7-0 victory over their rivals.
However, the overexcited supporter lost his footing and collided with Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson as he careened into the melee of players.
Fan footage captured the moment, and Liverpool FC have condemned the dangerous and illegal behaviour, beginning an immediate investigation to identify and ban the individual involved from future matches.
The teenager was arrested on suspicion of encroaching onto a football pitch, with police now working with Liverpool Football Club regarding the incident. If found guilty, he could face a criminal record and a lifetime ban from Anfield and all Premier League stadiums.
Liverpool FC’s statement about the incident emphasized that the safety and security of players, colleagues, and supporters is paramount, and acts like these are unacceptable and have severe consequences.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was seen screaming in the face of the pitch invader as he was escorted away by security.
Robertson was seen clutching his ankle after the incident, and midfielder Curtis Jones may have suffered a knock as well. Liverpool fans have also criticized the young fan’s behaviour, with some demanding a lifetime ban.
